provides a long-term food source for birds and other animals leaves no harmful materials allows visitors to revisit bird sites
Mind map
mapping out relevant factors to help narrow down on research focus
bird feeder has the most potential to redesign
Interview of Experts
would like a bird feeder for a variety of birds, not just a certain type
hopes to solve existing problems of sustainability, intruder prevention, and sanitation

Interview of Consumers
wants a product that contains less plastic, and is easily incorporated into the birds' natural habitat
wants a product that is easily accessible when cleaning, or no cleaning required

Inspiration + Sketches
from research and interviews, i start sketching existing bird feeders to get a sense of form and function.
thinking of designs that can easily incorporate into nature.
ideas of a feeder with additional functions come to mind such as adding a bird bath to feeder.
a compact design helps bird-lovers carry the feeder to the birds’ natural habitat. consumers demand a sustainable product for birds, people and the environment.
Color + Material
considering organic materials for sustainability
Exterior
birch veneer is low cost and diverse in color, texture, and grain
Center Tubing
white calligraphy paper as an
all-year option
light green grass paper with
fiber as a spring option
light tan grass paper as a fall option
Design Refinement
Square
narrowing down from earlier results, using both round and square as inspiration to further develop the final product
Round
round form is chosen since it is more visually pleasing, and
easy to manufacture
a roof on top prevents bird droppings, it also can be used as a funnel when filling
3D Modeling Specification

Four-Step Setup:
allows users easily setup the bird feeder at the site (feed is pre-packed in the roof)
Step 1:
pull out top perch to expose the top cap
Step 2:
pull out the center tubing
Step 3:
turn roof upside-down to allow feed to fill up the center tubing

Product Life Cycle
MUJI Bird Feeder impacts nature, and the way animals and humans live by providing stable food sources for birds and other animals, establishing bird sites for bird watchers, and biodegrading into nature since it consists of all natural materials
bird feeder is placed on a tree
birds are attracted by the feed
after three to six months, the feeder falls off and biodegrades
leftover seeds can germinate and start a new food source
